Rain, mountain snow returning to New Mexico

Happy Wednesday!

We have started this afternoon with temperatures reaching the 60s and low 70s in the Albuquerque Metro Area. Today’s forecast details clouds and sunshine across the state with seasonable high temperatures. Wind gusts have reached the upper teens, and 20s with forecasted gusts to range from the teens to 30s, at least, through the next two days. After Wednesday chilly weather will be around for sections of New Mexico by Thursday morning. Low temperatures are forecasted to reach the 30s in western and northern New Mexico. Temperatures will be cooler on Thursday and Friday throughout much of the state. A backdoor cold front will push in additional moisture and cooler air behind it. By Friday temperatures will be 5 to 30 degrees below normal. Friday’s highs are expected to range from the upper 30s, to the 60s in eastern New Mexico.

As previously stated, that cold front will bring moisture to eastern New Mexico, which will allow for late season mountain snow showers to accumulate in the northern mountains – specifically the Sangre De Cristos. The snow may start to accumulate along the peaks of the mountains Thursday afternoon and stack up 6-12 inches, or more, through Friday night. Overnight through Friday morning the snow level is expected to drop to about 7,500 feet bringing a few inches to lower elevations near the mountains. The National Weather Service (NWS) upgraded a previous Winter Storm Watch, this afternoon, to a Winter Storm Warning for the Sangre De Cristo Mountains and nearby communities. That will go into effect at 3 PM on Friday and last through 12 AM Saturday…
