Fundraiser held for family of LASD deputy who died during Baker to Vegas relay

A fundraiser was held in Walnut on Saturday for the family of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputy Levi Vargas, who died on March 28 after suffering a medical emergency while participating in the 2026 Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay race.

The 30-year-old law enforcement veteran spent the last two years of his career with the San Dimas Sheriff’s Station, where he made a big impact on his community, Capt. Michael Moen of the San Dimas Sheriff’s Station told KTLA.

“He impacted everybody he dealt with, whether it was calls for service, or just interacting with the community,” Moen said. “I can’t speak highly enough about him.”

Vargas became suddenly ill near the end of the 120-mile run from Baker to Las Vegas. He suffered an unexpected medical emergency and died suddenly…
