Girls from Fowlerville, Hartland among MHSAA Scholar-Athlete Award finalists

Fans who follow high school athletics in Hartland and Fowlerville know how successful Cameron Herman and Tori Briggs have been in their respective sports.

What they probably don’t know is how well the level of dedication they possess also translates to the classroom.

Herman and Briggs are the only two Livingston County athletes among the 120 finalists for the Michigan High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete Awards. That list will be trimmed to 32 award winners in February.

The finalists were chosen from a list of 1,607 applications.

“I was very honored that I’ve been able to get this far with the scholarship,” Briggs said. “I thought it was pretty cool. There were 1,607 total applicants and I’m one of the remaining 120.”

To be eligible for the award, an athlete must have at least a 3.5 grade-point average, have a varsity letter in an MHSAA-sponsored sport, respond to a series of short essay questions, submit two letters of recommendation and a 500-word essay on the importance of sportsmanship.
