The shutdown left thousands of workers nationwide, including many North Texas crews, suddenly out of a job after all Spirit flights were canceled overnight.

Earlier this month, Spirit announced that it had started an orderly wind-down of its operations, effective immediately, canceling all flights and leaving about 17,000 employees without jobs, according to AP News. At the overlook park, former crew members in black and yellow stood in small circles, trading stories, scrolling through old photos, and sharing long hugs during a low-key farewell that drew former flight attendants and ground staff, as reported by Spectrum News. Marvel Falade, who said she had held on to her Spirit gear because she planned to return after a career pause, told Spectrum she was “shocked and devastated” by the airline’s abrupt end.

Why the shutdown happened

Business reporting has pointed to a sharp rise in jet fuel costs and the collapse of a last-ditch rescue plan as the immediate triggers that made Spirit’s ultra-low-fare model unsustainable, according to Bloomberg. The mix of higher operating costs and a second bankruptcy left the carrier unable to keep flying.

Seniority and the scramble for work

Many at the plaza pointed out that moving to another airline often means starting from scratch, since pay and positions are based on seniority.
