I’ll be honest, there was a hot minute when I wasn’t sure what this week’s theme would be. But when my mother showed up with boxes — plural — of baklava and demanded that I take them away from her, the decision was made for me. Normally, I don’t go for baklava, so it took me by surprise when I inhaled three of them with a cup of strong black tea and went back in for more.
It’s no wonder these pastries are often paired with coffee, as the sweetness nicely balances acidity. This week, we feature a couple spots that serve baklava and coffee or tea, but I’ve also included some restaurants, in case you’re wanting to have a full meal. What can I say, I’m a people pleaser.
Many flavors at JoJo Baklava Café & Sweets
This sweets shop in Keller offers a very wide range of baklava, so whatever flavor you’re looking for, they probably have it. Along with the traditional walnut version, they offer coffee, Nutella, almond, pistachio, Oreo and other varieties. Staff announced on their social media page last week that they’re now also distributing their pistachio and walnut baklavas to other businesses in the area, so foodies around Keller might soon be eating JoJo baklava without realizing it.
If baklava isn’t for everyone in your party, other desserts include rice puddings, basbousa, cinnamon rolls, cannolis, cakes and kataifi. Diners can wash the sweet treats down with a pistachio latte or another of their other drinks…
