DENVER (KDVR) — The nearly 100-year-old bandstand at City Park that caught fire in March is set to be rebuilt after a structural assessment found it wasn’t salvageable.
Mayor Mike Johnston and Denver Parks & Recreation announced that the bandstand is set to be demolished in the fall, and construction of the new bandshell is set for the end of the year after an assessment found the remaining structure wasn’t salvageable.
City Park Jazz trying to keep concerts after historic bandstand destroyed in fire
This comes after a fire in March destroyed most of the bandstand, which had been standing for nearly 100 years. The bandstand, built in 1929, sits right across from the City Park Pavilion, where City Park Jazz held concerts in the summer. City Park Jazz is still running this summer, but not at the bandstand.
The firm Mundus Bishop is leading the design of a new bandshell, which is set to open in time for the 2027 City Park Jazz season.
“Whether it’s posing for photos before prom, getting married, or dancing with mom or dad during City Park Jazz, countless memories have been made at the City Park Bandstand,” said Johnston. “It’s time to start making memories again. I’m deeply grateful to the many people who have donated and ensured that we will be able to begin the work of replacing it soon, and that we will do so without interrupting or delaying other parks projects in development.”…
