2 plead not guilty in prison murder case

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Two inmates at Kern Valley State Prison on Monday pleaded not guilty to murder in the stabbing death of another inmate two years ago.

Andrew Espinoza, 31, and Frank Vasquez, 46, are due back in court next week for a preliminary hearing.

They’re accused of killing Raul E. Mendoza, 30, who died days after being attacked in May 2024, according to California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Mendoza, who was serving 11 years for voluntary manslaughter, suffered multiple puncture wounds, officials said.
