Current and would-be Baton Rouge school board members back embattled LaMont Cole staying in charge

LaMont Cole continues to lead the day-to-day operations of the East Baton Rouge Parish school system despite facing multiple public corruption charges arising from his previous position as an elected member of the Metro Council.

More than a week after Cole’s indictment by a state grand jury, there is little sign that his job status is changing anytime soon.

In the immediate aftermath, several current board members said they support Cole staying on as school superintendent while he defends himself from the charges, which he says are “based on association, not attestation, and proximity to potential crimes without proof.”…
