Families push to strengthen state regulations after suing Carver Memorial cemetery over headstone issues, other complaints

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) -Multiple families have filed lawsuits after paying for headstones for their loved ones at George Washington Carver Memorial cemetery in Birmingham that they say never showed up. In one case, the wrong headstone was placed on a grave.

WBRC has investigated complaints at Carver cemetery for years over missing headstones, grass not being cut and poor record keeping.

Tayana Robinson’s mother, Tracy, worked for 30 years at UAB in health information management. Tracy battled multiple cancers, enduring numerous rounds of chemo, radiation and surgery, but lost her battle in April 2024.

Robinson tells WBRC she prepaid for burial services and plot space at Carver Memorial before her mother passed away, then paid nearly $2,000 for her mother’s headstone after she passed. She showed us the receipt…
