Til death do us part. That famous vow has been more like a goal than a promise for many married Alabama couples throughout the years. Instead, another D-word did the trick: divorce.
But that’s changing — at least in most parts of the state.
Divorces have steadily declined here — and across the nation — for the last decade. Overall, the state saw the number of contested divorce filings fall from nearly 13,000 in 2010 to just over 8,000 in 2025. That’s a decline of about 5,000 divorces, or 37% in a decade and a half.
