What you need to know about NYC mandatory trash bins ahead of June 1 deadline

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Homeowners and property managers across Staten Island will soon need to make room at the curb for a very specific kind of trash bin.

Beginning June 1, New York City will require residential buildings with one to nine units — including one- and two-family homes, nonprofits and city agencies — to use officially designated rat-resistant trash containers for curbside collection, according to the city Department of Sanitation.

The new requirement is part of the city’s broader push to remove loose black garbage bags from sidewalks and curb the rat population by shifting toward standardized, lidded containers compatible with mechanized collection.

Who must comply?

The mandate applies to owners of low-density residential buildings, including most Staten Island homes. Larger residential buildings have already been subject to similar requirements since last year…
