Legal expert weighs in on judge’s findings in Schleier case

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — A portion of the judge’s conclusions in finding a Marion man accused of killing his son not guilty by reason of insanity Monday has caught attention.

The man, Matthew Schleier, was accused of killing his 5-year-old son, Jack, in October 2024.

Emily Hughes, a professor at the University of Iowa’s College of Law, told Iowa’s News Now that judges will “try to explain things in a way that will make it easy for non-lawyers to understand.”…
