‘It hurt’: Monrovia Cemetery restored after years of families leading maintenance responsibilities

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — A historic African American cemetery in Charleston has been restored after years of families leading their own maintenance responsibilities and calling for accountability.

The neighboring development of Magnolia Landing stepped in to lead a major beautification initiative and pay for the ongoing maintenance of Monrovia Cemetery in 2025. They recently completed restoration efforts, including raising the grounds with new soil to prevent flood damage, replacing cracked bricks and headstones, installing a weather-resistant fence and implementing regular landscaping.

“We just saw a need, we read about it, and then we’re able to meet with Monrovia and understand kind of what they wanted to do,” Stuart Hall, vice president with Highland Resources, the company overseeing Magnolia Landing, said. “We wanted to step in and help.”…
