After fire, inspectors find widespread smoke alarm issues at Charleston motel

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Investigators say a West Ashley motel that caught fire on Sunday either had numerous missing or non-functional smoke alarms. The property was ordered to vacate temporarily.

The Charleston Fire Department and multiple auto-aid partners responded to the West Ashley Inn on Sunday after a candle in a unit’s bathroom ignited nearby items, causing substantial damage to multiple rooms.

An investigation found that the smoke alarms in the affected unit were inoperable at the time. A follow-up inspection of the property revealed that multiple alarms throughout the building were either missing or non-functional…
