‘These are the largest fires we will ever fight geographically’ | Suffolk Fire and Rescue sees uptick in fires, citywide burn ban issued

SUFFOLK, Va. — Officials in Suffolk are urging residents to stay alert as ongoing dry weather and shifting winds continue to elevate the risk of fires across the region.

Suffolk Fire & Rescue has issued a temporary burn ban that will remain in effect until further notice. The decision comes after a noticeable increase in both the number and severity of fires in recent days.

“In 2025, we ran a total of 54 weather-related emergencies, and in the last five days, we’ve ran 20,” said Fire Marshal Chris Cornwell. “Which is another reason we’re concerned regarding these types of emergencies, and another reason why we instituted the burn ban when we did.”…
