Sheriff union calls for an elected Sheriff in Cuyahoga County

CLEVELAND — Cuyahoga County has seen nine different sheriffs over the last 13 years.

“The current model, it’s been in place for about 15 years, nine different sheriffs over this time, a variety of different reasons. And that system has not been able to optimize. Why? Because, administratively, there’s extra steps that are even outside of the charter. The charter intended independence for one which is not elected,” said Harold Pretel, Sheriff for Cuyahoga County.

Pretel said he believes it is time for a change. He supports proposed legislation to return the position of sheriff to an elected one, rather than an appointed one…
