Spirit Airlines cancels all flights at Columbus airport, shuts down after 34 years

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — All Spirit Airlines flights are canceled after the company announced it was going out of business after 34 years, effective immediately.

As of Saturday, Spirit Airlines said it was bankrupt and ending all service. The airline said it started an immediate “orderly wind-down” of operations, canceling all flights and shutting down customer service. According to Fly Columbus, the change affected four flights at John Glenn International Airport.

At John Glenn, Spirit flights to and from Fort Lauderdale and Orlando were canceled Saturday. Rickenbacker Airport does not offer Spirit flights and does not appear to be affected by the closure. A spokesperson for the Columbus Airport Authority said guests should contact Spirit for refunds and look online for replacement flights.

“Our hearts go out to the Spirit team members affected and to the passengers who counted on them as an option out of Columbus,” John Glenn, or CMH, said on social media. “Spirit’s presence at CMH had been shrinking over the past few years — most recently down to regular service to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando. As that happened, other airlines stepped in to meet demand on those routes, and we’re grateful for it.”…
