Marcus Rasberry Jr. entered Buford High School in the fall of 2022 as a freshman track and field athlete with work ethic and a desire to be great. Four years later, those internal traits remain, but he wouldn’t even recognize himself otherwise.
“I came in as a freshman, I was throwing (the discus) 86 feet and now my personal record is 180,” said Rasberry, the Daily Post’s Boys Field Performer of the Year. “Almost 100 feet more. I think back now and I’m like, ‘Wow, I could barely throw it 80 feet.’ But that’s kudos to my coaches and teammates for pushing me and making me work harder.”
The recent high school graduate ended his Buford career with an individual state championship, handily winning in the discus with a distance of 174-3. Even if the one-time 86-foot thrower wasn’t ready to compete with the best as a ninth-grader, everyone could see the potential, especially head coach Fyrone Davis…
