A guard tried to break up a fight in Deep Ellum. Now, a $1M lawsuit claims the venue let his killer pay to bypass security.

DALLAS — The mother of a security guard killed at a Deep Ellum nightclub last month has filed a wrongful death lawsuit seeking over $1 million in damages, accusing the venue of prioritizing profits over safety.

Juliana Gray filed the lawsuit individually and on behalf of the estate of her son, Joseph Gray, in a Dallas County district court on June 2. The suit names MRVS Taxco, LLC, doing business as La Tardeada, and Detorius Tarver as defendants.

According to Dallas police, the shooting occurred on May 5, 2026, inside La Tardeada located at 2810 Elm St. Police said the preliminary investigation showed that Tarver, 23, was involved in a physical disturbance inside the business. Joseph Gray, 26, was working as a security guard and trying to break up the fight when Tarver shot him, according to authorities.
