First Look: Ian Roberts arrest video

DES MOINES, Iowa (WHO) — The public is getting its first look at how the arrest of then Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent Ian Roberts unfolded.

A more than 5-minute-long video obtained by WHO 13’s Katie Kaplan picks up during the multi-law enforcement agency manhunt for Roberts in a wooded area near the Ewing Trace Mobile Home Park, where Roberts abandoned his district-issued vehicle after a short pursuit with Federal agents.

Roberts had been under orders to be removed from the country, and immigration agents had set up surveillance near his Des Moines home on the morning of his arrest. Roberts drove away from them after they approached.

The video shows armed Iowa State Patrol Troopers and a K9 Unit searching the woods and calling near the Ewing Trace Mobile Home Park, near where he abandoned his district-issued vehicle after leading Federal agents on a chase.

In the video, one of the responding officers hears a cell phone, then a few moments later, Roberts can be heard calling out to alert them that he will be emerging from his hiding spot…
