Charges amended for DSM man accused of strangling, holding woman captive

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man accused of strangling a woman and holding her captive with assistance from his mother is facing amended charges.

In August, the Des Moines Police Department announced that two individuals had been arrested following an hours-long barricade in the Gray’s Woods neighborhood. Authorities say they were called to the residence around 2 a.m. on August 6 after an open 911 call indicated a woman crying and a man threatening to harm her.

Officers arrived on the scene, where they encountered Deann Schaefer, 57, who stated she was home alone and had not called 911. Upon entry, police learned two others were home: 38-year-old Patrick Ross and a 38-year-old woman. Police say the woman reported Ross had pushed and choked her and then wouldn’t let her leave…
