Averette Julius Alston was charged on Thursday and his arrest warrant was served while he was already in the custody of the NC Department of Corrections.

Alston’s arrest—26 years in the making—was the result of a positive match from the Combined DNA Index System. The CODIS system is a national database that is made up of DNA profiles from convicted offenders, unsolved crime scene evidence, and missing persons.

Stated in Alston’s arrest warrant is a description of the crimes Alston is accused of committing on Aug. 28, 1998, at which time he would have been 26. His charges include felony first-degree rape, felony first-degree kidnapping and felony first-degree sexual offense.

The offense summary said Alston, “unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously did kidnap” the victim, who was 16 or older at the time.
