Federal Grant Could Create ‘Safety Town’ At Okeeheelee Park

Officials from Palm Beach County are seeking more than $11 million in federal grant money to fund the construction of a new interactive children’s traffic safety space at Okeeheelee Park, coupled with an array of roadway safety improvements across the county.

The Palm Beach County Commission unanimously approved a resolution for staff to submit an application for the project at a workshop meeting Tuesday, May 19. If awarded, the federal grant would cover 80 percent of the project’s cost through the Federal Highway Administration’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program.

Included in the application is “Safety Town,” an interactive space featuring a miniature community with streets, a railroad crossing, crosswalks, signals and small buildings…
