The Palisades fire swept through the Santa Monica Mountains with devastating force, raising urgent fears that the region’s final population of endangered steelhead trout had been lost. These fish, already reduced to a single known group, faced what many experts viewed as an existential threat from the blaze and its aftermath. Weeks later, surveys in Topanga Creek revealed that the trout had endured the flames and gone on to reproduce, producing new offspring in the same waterway.

The Scale of the Threat

Steelhead trout in the Santa Monica Mountains represent one of the southernmost populations of this anadromous species, which migrates between freshwater and the ocean. Their numbers had already dwindled sharply due to habitat loss, drought, and barriers to migration, leaving only a small remnant group before the fire. The Palisades fire burned across critical creek corridors and surrounding slopes, prompting immediate concern that rising water temperatures, ash runoff, and debris flows would eliminate the last individuals.

Wildlife biologists monitoring the area described the post-fire conditions as particularly harsh for cold-water fish like steelhead. Sediment and contaminants can choke spawning grounds, while altered stream flows disrupt the delicate balance these trout require to survive and breed. With the population already at such low levels, any additional stress carried the risk of total local extinction.

The Discovery and Reproduction

Follow-up assessments in Topanga Creek turned up live steelhead trout, confirming that at least some fish had weathered the fire’s direct and indirect effects. Further examination showed evidence of recent spawning, with young trout present alongside the adults. This outcome stood in contrast to the initial assessments that had prepared for the worst-case scenario of complete loss…
