ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Thousands of athletes are set to descend on Rockford this weekend for the return of the IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon, bringing a boost in visitors — and significant traffic impacts across the city and surrounding areas.
The race takes place Sunday, June 14, with competitors completing a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride and 13.1-mile run. Organizers say the course will stretch well beyond downtown Rockford into Winnebago County and the Village of Rockton, prompting widespread road closures starting early Sunday morning and, in some cases, days in advance.
Closures begin Friday in downtown Rockford
Several downtown streets will shut down as early as Friday evening to prepare for race operations.
- Portions of South Wyman Street, South Main Street and North Main Street near State Street close at 5 p.m. Friday and remain closed through late Sunday or early Monday morning.
- Additional downtown areas, including segments near Elm Street and Mulberry Street, will also be closed through Sunday night.
These early closures are tied to staging areas, transition zones and event setup in the city core.
Race day impacts: Sunday road closures across the region
Much of the traffic disruption will happen on race day, with closures beginning as early as 4 a.m. Sunday and continuing into the evening.
Key Rockford closures include:
- Chestnut Street, Church Street and Wyman Street: closed from 4 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
- West State Street (Wyman to Main): closed 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
- West State Street (Main to Business U.S. 20): closed 6:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.
- North and South Main Street corridor: impacted starting 4 a.m., remaining restricted through late Sunday night.
Closures also affect areas near the UW Health Sports Factory, the Rock River pedestrian paths, and multiple downtown bridges and river crossings.
Partial closures and lane restrictions
Several major routes will remain open but restricted to one lane at times, including:
- U.S. 20 Business (State Street)
- Auburn Street and Pierpont Avenue
- North Main Street, Harlem Boulevard and surrounding roads
These lane reductions are expected to slow traffic through much of the day.
Impact extends into Winnebago County and Rockton
The bike course means closures won’t be limited to Rockford.
In Winnebago County, several rural and arterial roads — including Freeport Road, Prairie Road, Yale Bridge Road and Harrison Road — will see closures between approximately 7 a.m. and early afternoon Sunday…
