Johns Island park marks milestone as state’s largest nature-based flood control project

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The Dale T. Morris Ecological Park in Johns Island opened on Wednesday to decrease flooding, improve water quality, and support community resilience.

The $5.8 million, 19.4-acre park uses natural green infrastructure and is designed to reduce flooding to under eight hours during a 100-year storm, making it the largest nature-based flood mitigation project in the region.

“What we are opening today on Johns Island is more than a park; it is a commitment to this community,” said Mayor William Cogswell. “It protects families from flooding, improves water quality, and creates a greenspace that Johns Island residents can enjoy for generations.”…
