Pender County Schools faces budget shortfall despite funding increase

BURGAW, N.C. (WECT) – Pender County Schools says it will need to make budget cuts despite receiving additional funding from the county for the upcoming fiscal year.

The district received a $1.3 million increase in current-expense funding and $6 million in capital funding for 2026-2027. The capital funding will address facility, maintenance, HVAC, transportation, technology and infrastructure needs.

However, the current expense increase falls short of the district’s request, according to a spokesperson for Pender County Schools.
