SPRINGFIELD, Ga. (WTOC) – A historic school in Effingham County is getting new life through a county-led renovation project.
Springfield Central High School opened in 1956 as part of Georgia’s statewide equalization effort — a push to improve school facilities while maintaining segregation. The school served hundreds of Black students in grades 1 through 12 before it closed in 1970.
The building, on Wallace Drive, continued to be used for decades after the high school closed, serving at different points as an elementary school, middle school, preschool and recreation space, according to county officials and alumni…
