This Day in History: June 21, 2015: ‘Bridge to Peace’ unity chain formed after Emanuel 9 shooting

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — On this day in history, nearly 20,000 people gathered on the Ravenel Bridge to form a unity chain.

The movement was called “Bridge to Peace,” and it was a massive demonstration of solidarity days after the deadly Mother Emanuel AME Church shooting that killed nine people.

On June 21, 2015, people from Mount Pleasant and downtown Charleston walked up opposite sides of the Ravenel Bridge, met in the middle and joined hands to span the entire length of the bridge. When the two groups met in the center, everyone held a nine-minute moment of silence to honor the victims…
