HCA Healthcare Trident doctors use old therapy in new way for osteoarthritis relief

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Doctors at HCA Healthcare Trident are turning to an unconventional approach for treating osteoarthritis, and early results are drawing attention from the medical community.

Osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease, often makes simple movements excruciating for patients. “Joint pain and limited mobility can affect patients’ quality of life. Their daily activities typically get worse with age,” said Dr. Vincent Grzywacz, a radiation oncologist at HCA Healthcare Trident.

Now, the hospital is reintroducing a decades-old therapy in a new way: low-dose external beam radiation. “Essentially, what it is is low-dose external beam radiation therapy for patients with osteoarthritis. It significantly improves their pain, with minimal side effects,” Grzywacz said…
