Wilmington’s electric fan distribution drive for seniors is up and running for the summer – but this may not be the best week to use one around the house.
The city began to distribute electric fans three weeks ago for senior citizens 65 or older who live in Wilmington. The Mayor’s Office of Constituent Services said the program is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on the 7th floor of the City County Building, 800 North French Street. Proof of age and city residency are required, and the city requests that you do not ask for one if you got a fan in 2025.
Also, although an electric fan may create a pleasant breeze and the sound may help you sleep, it may only have limited effectiveness during the extreme temperatures like the ones that are expected this week. When the outdoor temperature tops 95 degrees, a fan could create a false sense of comfort, not actually reducing body temperature.
