From the archives: 18 years before America’s 250th, Newark celebrated its own semiquincentennial

This weekend, Americans of all stripes will celebrate the country’s 250th birthday, marking the anniversary of the day in 1776 when the colonists declared their independence from the king and launched the American experiment.

There will be celebrations in big cities like Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., as well as thousands of small towns from sea to shining sea. Here in Newark, residents will mark the occasion by attending the city’s Liberty Day festival and fireworks show at the University of Delaware athletic complex.

It’s sure to be a memorable weekend celebrating independence, freedom and the ideals America has strived — and continues to strive — to uphold…
