In the footsteps of history: Walking tour traces the route 17,000 British troops took through Newark in 1777

It was early in the morning on Sept. 8, 1777, and the residents of Newark could see trouble coming.

Five days earlier, George Washington’s Continental Army had battled British troops at Cooch’s Bridge, south of town. After the battle, some 17,000 British soldiers spent a few nights camping in the area between Glasgow and Iron Hill.

From high points in Newark, townspeople could see the fires built by the soldiers…
