KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City leaders gave first approval to an expansion project at CPKC Stadium on Thursday. The council will have to vote again, though, before up to $235 million in bonds are obligated to it.
If the U.S. gets the bid to host the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2031, there’s a chance that the stadium on the Missouri River could host matches.
The vote was 10-2 on Thursday– the two votes not in support were from Nathan Willett and Johnathan Duncan.

Crews would add 6,500 seats to the stadium, bringing its capacity to 18,000. The expansion would include more parking, trail connections, shops and mixed-use developments.
