Tulsa’s “Let Freedom Ring” Ceremony Celebrates Independence Day While Teaching History

TULSA, Okla. — The Oklahoma Societies of the Sons of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Children of the American Revolution hosted the annual “Let Freedom Ring” ceremony Saturday morning at Bayless Plaza on the University of Tulsa campus. The patriotic event has been a local tradition for more than 30 years and features the presentation of the colors, patriotic music, readings from the Declaration of Independence, and the ceremonial ringing of a Liberty Bell replica.

This year’s ceremony carries added significance as the nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Organizers say the milestone has sparked renewed interest in the country’s founding and the events that led to America’s independence.

“I think this year, because of the historical aspect of our country being 250 years old, there’s been more of an interest to look back at the actual history of the event,” said Ron Painter, honorary state president of the Oklahoma Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. “Of course, who naturally to deliver that other than the Sons of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the American Revolution.”…
