‘Created on purpose for a purpose’: Disability day camp rolls out green carpet in Raytown

RAYTOWN, Mo. (KCTV) – The nation’s largest disability day camp is underway this week in Raytown, where more than 225 campers are greeted each morning with a green carpet entrance and a personal cheering section.

SOAR Special Needs camp runs July 6–10 at Connection Point Church in Raytown, with a second session scheduled July 20–24 at Westside Family Church in Lenexa, Kansas. Camp hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

A welcome rooted in loss

Founder and Executive Director Stephen “Doc” Hunsley started SOAR nearly 15 years ago after his son Mark died at age 5.

“His favorite color was green and the reason SOAR exists,” Hunsley said.
