First Alert Weather: Scattered thunderstorms for the afternoon, evening

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – THE NEXT 24 HOURS: This morning, a few communities have developed patchy dense fog. Visibility is low, so remember to use your low beams and low speeds. Otherwise, a beautiful start with temperatures mainly in the 70s. By this afternoon and evening, scattered thunderstorms will develop, and a few could produce brief, localized gusty winds. Any storm that lingers into the evening should fade as the sun goes down. High temperatures will be in the low 90s with heat index values nearing 100 degrees. The UV Index today is 10, meaning it will take 20 minutes or less to get a sunburn without sun protection. Wear sunscreen today and every day!

REMAINDER OF THE WEEK: A typical Alabama summertime pattern will continue through the remainder of the week. Scattered showers and storms are possible through Friday. On Friday, there is a marginal risk for storms for areas mainly along and north of HWY 278. The main concern will come from gusty winds. The heat will ramp up again Friday into Saturday, with heat index values possibly nearing 105 degrees, which could get close to Heat Advisory levels.

THE WEEKEND AHEAD: Over the weekend, rain and storms are likely. On Saturday into Sunday, a bigger change may start as a stronger dome of heat builds over the country and helps push an unusual July cold front south into the state. That front, along with smaller disturbances moving in, could bring widespread showers and storms Sunday and Monday, with heavy rain and gusty winds as the top threats. By the middle of next week, confidence is growing that temperatures will stay above average.
