Overcrowding, staffing still issues at Hinds Co. jail, months after receiver takes over

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – A federal receiver appointed to oversee the Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond says overcrowding, staffing, and facility issues remain a problem, months after he was given the job.

On Friday, Wendell France gave an update to U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves on conditions at the detention center, saying that he is asking the county to again raise pay for detention center officers, and to possibly reopen A-Pod to cut down on transport costs for detainees being housed in Tallahatchie County.

Meanwhile, he says that the jail has about 500 detainees housed in Pods B and C, which he says should only house around 400…
