SELA Flood Protection East activating emergency operations ahead of TS Bertha

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Officials with Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority – East, in anticipation of the impacts of Tropical Storm Bertha, have activated emergency operations.

At 12 p.m. July 21, five major complex structures, along with 65 land-based floodgates, are scheduled to close.

Southeast Louisiana parishes announce preparations for tropical weather

The WGNO weather team reports the tropical storm watch is in effect for Metairie, Kenner, Houma, Gretna and Galliano with winds expected to hit 15-30 mph with gusts between 30-40 mph.

Officials state the closures are based on projected water levels, current forecasts and established operating procedures. By the end of Tuesday, FPA-East officials anticipate road closures throughout Orleans, East Jefferson and St. Bernard parishes.
