WALLER CO. SHERIFF’S OFFICE WARNING OF IMPERSONATION SCAMS

The Waller County Sheriff’s Office is alerting citizens about a series of phone scams involving impersonation of law enforcement personnel.

According to the sheriff’s office, the scams are targeting the families of inmates currently housed in the Waller County Jail. The caller claims to be a sergeant or other employee at the sheriff’s office and tells family members that their loved one can be released if they pay a large sum of money.

The victims are told to send payments in $500 increments using a barcode or QR code that the scammer claims is a “Safe Pay” system.

The sheriff’s office says it will never make calls to collect bond money or accept bond payments through barcodes, QR codes, gift cards or mobile payment apps. It will also never request payment in $500 increments over the phone…
