HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Students in Holyoke and Springfield public schools are the first to begin the school year in western Massachusetts.
Most school districts begin the new school year before Labor Day. Holyoke and Springfield start the school year off first on August 24th, followed by Palmer on August 25th for students in grades 1-12.
When schools in western Massachusetts will start this year
Holyoke Public Schools officially exited state receivership in July 2025, ending a period of state control that began in 2015. Since the district was placed in receivership to get its programs back on track, graduation rates have increased, suspension numbers have decreased and the district has expanded its dual language and pre-K programs.
Under the exit plan, the superintendent will continue to have control over staffing, scheduling, and compensation decisions. This year, the School Committee has selected Jackie Glasheen as the next superintendent. Glasheen, who has built strong community partnerships and created sustainable change, assumed the role on July 1.
