I personally don’t care if inspectors want to search our blue bin, (“Is the city snooping in your recycling? Portland launches recycling check program,” July 25). After all, the cans on our street are already searched by many who pass through, looking for redeemable containers. We never place any redemption items in our bin, and we keep it far from the street to avoid the mess that the digging sometimes leaves behind.
However, our neighbors have no place to store their bins away from the street. Passers-by often use them to toss their refuse, such as food and drink containers and pet waste bags. They often pay no regard to which bin they toss these in. On the night before pickup, when we put our bins out, they are subject to that same misuse…
