45 new troopers to join the Virginia State Police

RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) — 45 new troopers will graduate during commencement exercises at the State Police Training Academy in North Chesterfield County Friday morning, according to the Virginia State Police.

The troopers will receive their diplomas during the exercises at the academy at 10 a.m. on Aug. 21. As part of the 145th Basic Session, they began their 29 weeks of training at the academy on Jan. 26. they’ve received over 1,300 hours of classroom and field instruction in more than 100 subjects, which include the following:

  • De-escalation techniques
  • Strategies to assist people who are having a mental health crisis
  • Ethics and leadership
  • Fair and impartial policing
  • Constitutional law
  • Emergency medical trauma care
  • Public and community relations

The troopers come from parts of the Commonwealth and the following U.S. states:

  • Alabama
  • California
  • Florida
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Montana
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Pennsylvania
  • Texas

One of the new troopers is from the Republic of the Gambia.

After graduating, the troopers will report to their duty assignments across the Commonwealth, with several of them being assigned to the Hampton Roads region. Each trooper will also spend six weeks with a Field Training Officer to learn their new patrol area…
