New Orleans eviction prevention program spared from cuts through end of year

New Orleans tenants facing eviction will continue to receive free legal counsel through the end of the year after the council on Thursday reversed cuts that threatened the program.

The council unanimously approved an ordinance allocating $750,000 to the program known as “right to counsel,” which has been celebrated by housing advocates, tenants, and some landlords for helping prevent homelessness.

The future of the program became uncertain in July when the city announced it would provide just $575,000 this year — less than half of the $1.3 million it was slated to receive in the 2026 budget — in an attempt to solve the city’s cash crisis…
