I-81 widening project set to cause delays in Roanoke, Botetourt Counties; What drivers should expect

SALEM, Va. – The ongoing Interstate 81 widening project will result in likely delays for many drivers until late October, the Virginia Department of Transportation said.

VDOT said that blasting will occur for around eight weeks between exits 143 and 150 in Roanoke and Botetourt counties, starting the week of August 24. The blasting is set to occur between 9 and 11 a.m., Tuesdays through Thursdays. The exact days and times of these sessions will be communicated weekly, and message boards will keep drivers updated on the road.

Slow rolls are also set to be used in northbound and southbound lanes:

  • Northbound lanes beginning at the 146 on-ramp (Plantation Road)
  • Southbound lanes beginning at the 156 on-ramp (Troutville)
