Outdoor Picture of the Day: Royal Arch Frames the Flatirons
Today’s Outdoor Picture of the Day captures one of Boulder’s most distinctive natural landmarks from an unusually dramatic angle. Photographed from the side, Royal Arch rises from the mountainside like a massive stone doorway, its rugged red and golden rock illuminated in striking detail. Through the arch, the Flatirons appear in the distance, creating a rare frame-within-a-frame view of Boulder’s legendary landscape.
Most photographs of Royal Arch are taken directly in front of the opening. This close-up side view reveals something different: the thickness of the formation, the fractured stone, and the way the arch seems to lean out from the forested slope. Ponderosa pines surround the rock, while the warm color of the stone stands out against the Colorado sky.
The Flatirons visible through the opening complete the scene. These steeply tilted slabs are part of the Fountain Formation, a sequence of sandstone and conglomerate created from sediments deposited approximately 300 million years ago. Later mountain-building forces lifted and tilted the rock, producing the unmistakable formations that now define Boulder’s western skyline…
