Sizzling heat and humidity continue across the region, but now we’re set to deal with rounds of severe storms through the end of the week. One of these thunderstorm clusters is already rolling across MD out of PA, prompting Severe Thunderstorm Warnings. A general Severe Thunderstorm Watch also covers the entire region until 5 PM, though most of VA and WV will miss this line of storms as it rips through. The severe threat from this line will continue through the late afternoon until it pushes south of the area, with the DC metro likely seeing some strong wind gusts.
The one positive about these storms is that they cool it off significantly where they roll through, but not everyone will see the rain and storms. Where it remains dry, temperatures are pushing into the 90s, with a heat index in the triple digits. A Heat Advisory has been issued across portions of the Shenandoah Valley into central VA until 8 PM, where the heat and humidity will push the heat index to 105+ degrees. Be sure to do what you can to stay cool and hydrated, as this same heat and humidity will impact us tomorrow and part of Friday before it finally starts to cool down.
Before we can get to that relief, we’ll have a few more rounds of storms to deal with. While it likely quiets down this evening, there could be additional storms developing tonight, Thursday, and Thursday night. It really will be a wait-and-see kind of game as to when and where storms show up through tomorrow night, but it’s likely additional waves will show up. There is good agreement that it will be active again tomorrow afternoon and Thursday night, with some lulls in between, but that timing could shift a bit. Damaging wind gusts will be the primary concern out of any severe storms that develop, but some heavy rain and small hail can’t be ruled out.
Most of the severe weather will drop south of the area on Friday with a frontal boundary pushing through, but some isolated showers and storms can’t be ruled out with a bit of heat and humidity lingering around. Everything will be trending in the right direction on Saturday, with drier conditions and temperatures cooling off. The humidity will also drop off significantly as we head through the holiday weekend, with a comfortable feel and sunny skies on Sunday and Labor Day. High pressure will stick around and keep it quiet and seasonal through the middle of next week.
