RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – Beef prices are up more than 20% and potato salad costs about 23% more this year, according to a study by Groundwork Collaborative, as families across the country and in Nevada adjust their Labor Day plans.
Rising costs affect holiday traditions
Barbecue smells and the sound of hamburgers sizzling on the grill are part of what people look forward to for Labor Day and the transition from summer to autumn. But financial analysts are predicting families will have to tighten their belts this year, and those celebrations might be fewer and further between.
Janelle Jones, a senior fellow with Groundwork Collaborative and Century Foundation, said the price of beef in particular might cause sticker shock for those looking to host end-of-summer barbecues.
“I’m from the Midwest. We’re a cookout family. But when the price of beef is up 20%, when the price of bread is up 15%, it’s hard to think about kind of celebrating these things,” Jones said.
