Montserrat Miquel, center left, and Miguel Diaz dance as CompAndres y Los Hermanos Michel perform during the Tacos y Tequila Festival in Hillyard on Saturday, Aug. 29.
The festival was revived in a new location after it was cancelled last year due to safety concerns related to increased immigration enforcement activity.
In addition to live music, the celebration of Latino and Hispanic culture featured food trucks, craft vendors and more, and raised money for Nuestra Raíces Centro Comunitario, a nonprofit cultural and behavioral health center.
THE WEEK THAT WAS
- Meta will pay up to $17.1 billion in a multistate settlement over allegations that Facebook and Instagram failed to protect young users. Washington is guaranteed at least $237 million from the settlement. Meta will be required to add more safety features, including age verification and daily time limits for kids
- As worries over Flock surveillance cameras continue to grow, more agencies are reconsidering their use of the automated license plate readers. Early last week, the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office shut off the county’s three Flock cameras citing community concerns.
- On Aug. 25, the Spokane City Council voted 6-1 to enter due diligence for the $18.5 million purchase of a five-story building and property on Boone Avenue and North Atlantic Street. If the sale goes through, the city will combine public safety and court services there and stop renting space in three Spokane County buildings.
- Last week, the city of Spokane issued its first permit to rebuild a home after the Spokane Complex fires. After residents clear hazardous materials, obtain a negative asbestos survey and get a demolition permit — fee reduced to $35 — they can work with the city’s Development Services Center to determine a reconstruction plan.
- Spokanites can now check out hockey for free with help from the Spokane Public Library. The Museum and Culture Pass program now offers a few passes (four tickets each) to Spokane Chiefs games, which can be checked out once per year and reserved 60 days in advance of a given game via the library’s website, spokanelibrary.org.
