Lutheran Social Services of Nevada has filed for bankruptcy after the prospective buyer of its Boulder Highway headquarters walked away from the deal, closing the door on a sale that was supposed to give the collapsed charity a way to settle its debts. The nonprofit, which suspended operations in October, had been trying to unload its building at 4323 Boulder Highway in Las Vegas to Hope Christian Health Center for the property’s appraised value of $1.47 million.
The sale fell apart over what buyer and seller described in strikingly similar terms. Hope Christian Health Center CEO Steve Flores said there were simply too many tangled issues in the purchase, according to Las Vegas Review-Journal. The Federally Qualified Health Center, established in 2013 and led by Air Force veteran Flores, generated more than $12.2 million in revenue in 2024, according to Cause IQ, and had hoped to bring medical services and a food pantry to the property, with a mobile unit possibly parked in the lot.
Government funding tied to the building created restrictions that lowered its appraised value and complicated the sale, the report notes. Clark County had approved $5.8 million in federal Community Development Block Grant funds for the Boulder Highway Collaborative Campus back in 2016, money that helped build the Lutheran Social Services headquarters and a Boys & Girls Club on the same grounds, which also includes a charter school and low-income housing. The county later awarded another $1.8 million in 2023 for a building addition that included an expanded kitchen.
A Board That Says It Had No Other Options
The Lutheran Social Services of Nevada board said the bankruptcy filing came only after the buyer walked away and other reasonable efforts were exhausted, calling it a critical last resort.
